Welcome to

Cultural Differences

Ireland has a vibrant and social culture that flows from years of rich history and fantastic celebrations. Immerse yourself in this culture to enrich your study abroad experience. Read on for important Irish customs to know before you go abroad.

Dining

When dining in Ireland, it's important to keep in mind that the pace is slower, and meals are more about enjoying the company and conversation than rushing through the meal. It's common to eat dinner at pubs, as they are a big part of the dining scene. The food is quite good! While tipping isn't as expected as it is in the U.S., it's still appreciated for good service.  Be sure to try out one of the many ethnic neighborhood restaurants!

Clothing

The Irish dress quite similar to Americans, though perhaps a bit less casual when going to classes. Most students at university wear smart casual clothes to classes. Those visiting churches or places of worship tend to dress more conservatively.

Language

Irish, or Gaelic, is the native language of Ireland and an important part of the country's cultural heritage. While English is widely spoken, Irish is still used by a significant number of people in certain regions, and many signs and road signs are written in both English and Irish. While it's not necessary for study abroad students to learn Irish, it can be a fun and enriching experience to pick up a few phrases or words. Many universities and language schools in Ireland offer Irish language classes, and there are also plenty of online resources available for those who want to learn on their own time.

Social Interactions

The Irish people are known for their warm and welcoming nature, and their love for socializing is a big part of the country's cultural identity. Whether it's sharing a pint at a local pub, attending a traditional ceili dance, or chatting with neighbors over a cup of tea, the Irish are always up for a good time and a bit of craic (fun). They have a reputation for being great storytellers, and their wit and sense of humor are legendary. It's not uncommon to find yourself immersed in a lively conversation with a stranger, and many visitors to Ireland come away with new friendships and lasting memories of their interactions with the Irish people.
