Making a Doctor's Appointment in Ireland

If you become ill while in Ireland, we recommend contacting the Student Health Centre in UL. Office hours can be restrictive so it is good to call ahead to make an appointment.

Any students with a long term medical condition which requires regular review should register with a local General Practitioner (GP), as the Student Health Centre is not a GP service. For information regarding local GPs, please email Ria.Toland@ul.ie or use this GP directory to locate a GP.

If you need a doctor out of normal working hours you can contact Shannon Doc.

You will be able to use your CISI international health insurance for doctor visits but you may have to pay up front and claim it back through your insurance.  The average cost of a doctor’s visit will be between €50 and €70.

Important: See the Health Insurance section for more information on submitting insurance claims through your CISI International health insurance.

Chemists

It is important to note that in Ireland it is common to first visit a chemist for minor health issues before seeing a doctor. Chemists (known as pharmacies in the US) not only offer medicine, but also other health and beauty products. The chemists are trained professionals who can provide advice on over-the-counter medication for minor aches and pains. However, it is important to read the information accompanying your medication, particularly if you have any drug allergies. Additionally, it is important to note that pills in Ireland may come in different sizes than what is typical in the US, so it is important to pay attention to the recommended dosage.

On Sundays, not all pharmacies may be open, but one will be designated in each neighborhood. You can check the closest open pharmacy by visiting your nearest pharmacy and checking the posted information.
